SCOTT: $20 CAR LICENSE TAX WILL HAMPER RECOVERY --- REP. LIIAS SPONSORS TAX BILL

EDMONDS --- January 20, 2010 State Representative Candidate Elizabeth Scott (R-Edmonds) warned today that a new state tax-raising bill proposed by incumbent Marko Liias (D-Edmonds) would have the effect of slowing economic recovery. House Bill 2855, introduced on January 15, would raise taxes on multiple items including an annual $20 tax on car licenses. The taxes are intended to offset the decrease in revenue for public transportation but “will further burden struggling families,” Scott says.

“Twenty dollars might not sound like much to some, but for hard-hit families, it could mean a choice between car tabs or food,” Scott asserted. “This is not the time to raise taxes. Governor Gregoire promised barely a year ago that she would not raise taxes in a struggling economy, because it’s a job-killing strategy. On the other hand, if the Legislature lowers taxes, people will spend more. This will spur the economy, increase tax revenue, and create real jobs.” Scott was referring to the Governor’s promises during her 2008 campaign. (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008204902_govdebate26m.html) Scott added, “It’s time to respect the will of the People. They have approved $30 car tabs three times.”

House Bill 2855 would also allow cities to raise sales taxes, vehicle fees, excise taxes, employer taxes, and rental car taxes upon approval of a simple majority of voters. Scott offered, “Studies have shown that vanpools are a much more efficient mode of transportation; cheaper, and better for the environment as well. Every day I see nearly empty Swift buses, bought with taxpayers’ money. This waste is all the more outrageous when so many people are out of work.”

Scott encouraged legislators intent on balancing the budget to follow recommendations from State Auditor Brian Sonntag (D) to trim duplicate offices, and Senator Tim Sheldon (D-Potlatch) to privatize departments not mandated in the State Constitution.
