Defending Washington's Values

Elizabeth Scott believes that marriage is between one man and one woman.  In 1998, our State Legislature passed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), restricting marriage to the union of one man and one woman. In 2006, the Washington State Supreme Court ruled that this definition of marriage is constitutional.[1] However, in 2010, voters passed R-71, approving the legislation that gave same-sex couples all the legal rights and privileges of married couples in this state; the 'everything but marriage' law.

This November, Washington voters will have their say on the term 'marriage', as R-74 has received enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. If you vote "Approve," it means you approve of the law that allows 'same-sex marriage' (Senate Bill 5688, passed in February; it would go into effect as soon as the election results are certified this November). If you vote "Reject" in November, it means you believe that marriage is between one man and one woman.

Elizabeth Scott notes that in Washington state, same-sex couples already have all the same legal rights and responsibilities as married couples under state law, and she will be voting to 'Reject' the redefinition of the term 'marriage.' Elizabeth believes that marriage is between one man and one woman, and she has been tested and proven committed to this position. Freedom of speech, religious freedom, and the right to follow one's conscience are at stake.

On a similar note, Elizabeth Scott believes in the sanctity of life, from conception to natural death. This issue is not only a federal issue; at the state level, our taxes purchase abortions, legislation has been proposed that would harm crisis pregnancy centers, and conscience protections are under threat.
